The Washington State Labor Council and its 600 affiliated unions represent 450,000 members in Washington state.
Issaquah, WA, May 21, 2018—The Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education (COPE) voted on Saturday to endorse Dr. Kim Schrier in the race for Washington’s 8th Congressional District. The Washington State Labor Council is the largest association of unions in the state, with 600 affiliated unions representing 450,000 workers and their families in Washington.
“The Washington State Labor Council endorsement is a true honor,” said Dr. Kim Schrier. “Unions are the backbone of our middle class. Here in the 8th and across the country, we are seeing the horrific consequences of right to work laws and attacks on unions: a gap between the 10% and the rest of us that has grown to the point of a national crisis. We need representatives who will fight for workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain, especially in the face of attacks on unions and workers. I’ve spent my career serving working families in this district, and in Congress I will be a fierce advocate for Labor and working families.”
Washington State Labor Council President Jeff Johnson added, “Our members know that Kim will fight for Labor and working families in Congress. Kim has served working families for her entire career and has a unique understanding of the concerns facing families in the 8th District. Kim will be a champion and leader on pro-union policies in Congress, and she will be our ally against Republicans’ anti-union attacks.”
Dr. Schrier is the leading Democrat running for Congress in Washington’s 8th District, with the largest base of union member support. In addition to WSLC’s endorsement, Dr. Schrier has received endorsements from the 45,000 Washington aerospace machinists of IAM District Lodge 751, 42,000 state and public employees of AFSCME Council 28, and tens of thousands of workers from LiUNA Washington and Northern Idaho District Council, IUPAT District Council 5, and UA 598.
